Best Travel Adapters for Japan of 2026: 5 Compared for Outlets, USB-C & Size

By Best Pick Guide Editorial Team · Updated

Good news first: Japan uses the same flat two-prong plug shape as the US, so your phone charger will probably fit the wall. The catch is everything else. Many Japanese outlets have no hole for a third, round ground pin, so your laptop's three-prong cord won't go in. And the hotel room may have one free outlet for all your gear.

A European or universal adapter is overkill here, and a bare plug adapter only fixes the prong problem. What helps in Japan is a small Type A adapter that takes three-prong plugs and adds more outlets and USB-C ports.

We compared five adapters made for Japan. One turns a single outlet into four three-prong US outlets plus two USB-C and two USB-A ports, weighs 2.4 ounces, and comes as a 2-pack.

Why HANYCONY US to Japan Plug Adapter 8-in-1, 2 Pack is our #1 pick

Four outlets from one socket

The HANYCONY turns one Japanese wall socket into 4 US outlets that take three-prong plugs, so a laptop, camera charger and more all plug in at the hotel bedside.

Two USB-C ports built in

Two USB-C and two USB-A ports charge a phone, watch and earbuds without their wall bricks, which frees up the AC outlets.

Pocket-size, no cord

At 2.4 ounces and under 3 inches long, it slips into a pocket or daypack, and the 2-pack covers a second room or traveler.

What to look for

Look for three-prong input

Most Japanese outlets are two-prong only. If your laptop or camera charger has a ground pin, get an adapter that accepts three-prong plugs.

Count outlets and USB-C

Japanese hotel rooms can be small with few outlets. An adapter with several AC outlets plus USB-C means one socket charges everything overnight.

Check your chargers for 100V

Japan runs at 100V. Look for '100-240V' on each charger's label. None of these adapters change voltage.

Keep it small

You don't need a universal adapter for Japan. A compact Type A adapter without a cord is lighter and easier to carry around all day.

FAQ

Do I need a travel adapter for Japan?

For two-prong US plugs, usually not, since Japan uses the same Type A shape. You need one for three-prong plugs, or for extra outlets and USB ports.

Do I need a voltage converter for Japan?

Usually not for chargers. Japan uses 100V, and most phone, laptop and camera chargers are rated 100-240V. See our guide on voltage converters for Japan.

Will my US hair dryer work in Japan?

Check its label. A dryer rated only for 120V may run weaker on 100V. A dual-voltage dryer with a 100-240V rating is the safest choice.

Will a Japan adapter work anywhere else?

These Type A adapters also fit outlets in the US, Canada, Mexico and the Philippines, per their listings. They won't fit Europe or the UK.

Bottom line

For a trip to Japan, the HANYCONY 8-in-1 is the adapter to buy: 4 three-prong US outlets, 2 USB-C and 2 USB-A ports from one two-prong socket, in a 2.4 oz plug sold as a 2-pack. Choose the VINTAR for folding prongs, the TESSAN for bulky chargers, the meta-ant when the outlet is out of reach, and the Ceptics 3-pack for the smallest plug.
