Best Travel Backpacks for Europe of 2026: 5 Carry-On Packs Compared for Fit & Comfort

By Best Pick Guide Editorial Team · Updated

A trip through Europe is a walking trip whether you planned it that way or not: from the airport train to the hotel, up four flights of stairs, across a cobbled old town to the next station. A wheeled suitcase fights you the whole way. A 35 to 45 litre backpack that fits in the overhead bin does not.

The packs that disappoint share a few problems. They are a few centimetres too big for the stricter European cabin-bag limits. They have no hip belt, so twelve kilograms hangs off your shoulders all day. Or the straps cannot be tucked away, so they snag on everything from bus doors to luggage racks.

We compared five carry-on travel backpacks sold for exactly this kind of trip, from a light budget bag to the pack that has been the one-bag standard for years. One of them has the hip belt, the stowaway harness and the adjustable torso that make a full pack comfortable for a whole day.

Why Osprey Farpoint 40 Travel Pack is our #1 pick

A hip belt that disappears when you board

The Farpoint's harness and hip belt stow behind a zipped panel for the flight, then come out for the walk to the hotel. You get real load transfer on the street and a clean duffel-style bag in the overhead bin.

It can be fitted to your back

An adjustable torso length and a load-lifting frame are hiking-pack features, and they are why a full Farpoint carries like a backpack instead of a sack. None of the other four adjust for torso length.

Sized for the bin, guaranteed for the long haul

Osprey lists it at 55 x 35 x 23 cm, within most carry-on limits, and backs it with the All Mighty Guarantee. It is the pack people are still travelling with a decade later.

What to look for

Know the European limits

There is no single European cabin-bag size. Many full-service airlines allow about 55 x 40 x 23 cm; several budget carriers sell a 55 x 40 x 20 cm bag as an add-on and include only a small under-seat bag. Check the airlines on your itinerary and pack for the strictest one.

Insist on a hip belt for anything over 8 kg

A padded hip belt moves most of the weight onto your hips. For a weekend bag it is optional; for two weeks of clothes and a laptop it is the difference between enjoying the walk and counting the steps.

Stowable straps are not a gimmick

Straps that tuck away stop the pack snagging on train doors and overhead bins, and they are what let you hand the bag over as a duffel when a bus driver insists it goes in the hold.

Fit matters more than litres

A 35-litre pack that fits your back carries better than a 45-litre one that does not. Adjustable torso length is rare in travel packs; if you are notably tall or short, prioritise it.

FAQ

Is a 40-litre backpack carry-on size in Europe?

Usually, if its dimensions are around 55 x 35 x 23 cm or smaller and you do not overstuff it. Litres are not what the gate agent measures; the outside dimensions are. The strictest budget airlines allow 20 cm depth, which most 40-litre packs exceed.

Backpack or wheeled carry-on for Europe?

For city-to-city trips with trains, stairs and old streets, a backpack. For a single hotel and smooth pavements, wheels are fine. Many travellers pair a backpack with a small under-seat bag.

Do I need a hip belt?

Over about 8 kg, yes. Two of the five packs here include one. The others are better suited to lighter loads or short transfers.

What about a women's fit?

The Osprey Fairview 40 is the women's-fit version of the Farpoint 40 with the same features. The other packs here are one size.

Bottom line

For a trip around Europe out of one bag, the Osprey Farpoint 40 is the pack to buy: carry-on sized, a stowaway hip belt and harness, and an adjustable torso so a full load still carries well. Pick the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L if suitcase-style organisation matters more than fit adjustment, and the tomtoc Navigator if your trip is really about the laptop.
