Best Travel Adapters for Hair Dryers of 2026: 5 Compared for Wattage & Safety

By Best Pick Guide Editorial Team · Updated

You packed a plug adapter, plugged in your hair dryer in Paris or Rome, and it either roared too hot or went dead. That's because most US hair dryers are made for 120 volts, and most of the world runs at 220 to 240 volts.

A plug adapter only changes the shape of the plug. Most of them warn you not to use a hair dryer at all. Small travel converters often top out at a few hundred watts, while a regular US dryer can pull 1875 watts. So the honest answer comes down to wattage: either bring a converter rated above your dryer's watts, or bring a dual-voltage dryer that needs only a plug adapter.

We compared three hair dryer voltage converters and two dual-voltage travel dryers. One converter has a dedicated 2000W outlet for your dryer plus two more converted outlets for a flat iron and curling iron, with built-in overheat and short-circuit protection.

BESTEK 2000W Voltage Converter with 2 USB-C Ports

  • Runs your own US hair dryer

A converter whose 2000W outlet turns 100-140V or 200-240V power into 120V for hair dryers, with a second 200W outlet for dual-voltage devices, 2 USB-C PD 35W ports, 1 USB-A and EU, UK, AU, US and India plugs.

  • 2000W outlet converts from 100-140V or 200-240V to 120V, so it covers low-voltage and high-voltage countries

Why Ceptics 2000W Hair Dryer Voltage Converter with 2x 200W Outlets is our #1 pick

Enough watts for a real dryer

The Ceptics has its own 2000W outlet for hair dryers, so a typical 1875W US dryer stays under the limit instead of overloading a small travel converter.

Flat iron and curling iron covered

Two more converted 200W outlets run single-voltage straighteners and curling irons, so you don't need a second converter or new hair tools.

Everything at once, with safety cut-offs

Each tool has its own outlet, so you can dry and straighten in one session. A cooling fan and auto shut-down guard against overheating, over-current and short circuits.

What to look for

Read your dryer's watts

Look on the handle or cord tag. Many US dryers say 1875W. Pick a converter outlet rated above that number, not just close to it.

Check for dual voltage first

If the label says 100-240V or has a voltage switch, you only need a plug adapter. If it says 120V or 125V only, you need a converter or a dual-voltage travel dryer.

Count your hot tools

A dryer plus a flat iron needs either separate rated outlets or a total limit high enough for both. Small plug adapters and USB chargers aren't made for heating appliances.

Check the 'not for' list

Converter listings often exclude Dyson and other digital dryers, and some only work on 220-240V power. Read the warnings for the countries you'll visit.

FAQ

Can I use my hair dryer with just a travel adapter?

Only if the dryer is dual voltage (100-240V or has a voltage switch). A plug adapter doesn't change voltage, and most adapter listings warn against single-voltage hair dryers.

What size voltage converter do I need for a hair dryer?

One rated above your dryer's wattage. A 1875W US dryer needs an outlet rated for 2000W or more. Most small travel converters are rated for a few hundred watts and won't do.

Do these converters work with a Dyson hair dryer?

No. The Ceptics and BESTEK listings both say their converters won't work with Dyson or other digital electronic dryers.

Is a dual-voltage dryer better than a converter?

It's lighter to pack and needs only a plug adapter. A converter is better if you want to bring your own dryer or also run a single-voltage flat iron.

Bottom line

If you want to bring your own US hair dryer abroad, the Ceptics 2000W converter is the one to buy: a 2000W dryer outlet, two more converted outlets for a flat iron and curling iron, and built-in overheat protection. Choose the Ceptics pure sine wave model for faster USB charging, the BESTEK for trips that include low-voltage countries, the Conair for a full-power dual-voltage dryer, and the BaBylissPRO for the lightest bag.
