How Much Does an Ultrawide Monitor Weigh, and Why Your Arm Cares
Monitor arms are sold by screen size, but they fail by weight. An arm that is "for 49-inch screens" can still droop if your particular 49-inch screen is heavier than the arm's gas spring expects. Before buying an arm, find the one number that matters: the monitor's weight without its stand.
Where to find the number
Every monitor's spec page lists two weights: with stand and without stand. The arm only ever holds the panel, so use the "without stand" figure. Retail boxes and quick-spec cards usually print the heavier number, which makes arms look weaker than they are.
Typical weights without the stand
| Monitor | Size | Weight without stand |
|---|---|---|
| LG UltraWide 34WN80C-B | 34 in | 13.9 lb |
| Dell UltraSharp U3423WE | 34 in | 17 lb (7.72 kg) |
| Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 | 49 in | about 20 lb (9.2 kg) |
| Samsung Odyssey G9 (2023, S49CG954) | 49 in | 23.4 lb |
| Samsung Odyssey G9 (2020, LC49G95T) | 49 in | about 31 lb (14.1 kg) |
Two things stand out. A 34-inch screen is lighter than many people expect, usually 14 to 17 lb. And "49-inch" covers a 20 lb OLED and a 31 lb VA panel, which need very different arms.
Match the range, not just the maximum
Gas spring and constant-force arms are tuned for a weight window. Too heavy and the arm sinks. Too light and it floats up, or will not stay down at all. So check both ends:
- The maximum should sit comfortably above your monitor, ideally by 20 to 25 percent. A 31 lb panel on a 33 lb arm works on day one and often drifts within a year.
- The minimum matters for 34-inch screens. The Ergotron HX, for example, starts at 20 lb; a 14 lb LG will not balance on it. The Ergotron LX, rated 7 to 25 lb, is the right size for that monitor.
Curved screens count for more
A deep curve such as 1000R moves the panel's weight forward of the mounting plate, which loads the tilt joint harder than a flat panel of the same weight. Arms that are rated for curved screens say so in the listing. If yours does not mention curved or 1000R screens, treat its maximum as lower than printed.
Quick checklist
- Look up weight without stand.
- Add 25 percent. That is the minimum rating you want.
- Make sure the arm's minimum is below your monitor's weight.
- If the screen is curved, confirm the listing says curved or 1000R.
- Confirm VESA 100 x 100 (all five monitors above use it) and your desk's thickness and material.
Do those five and the arm you pick will still be level in three years.
