Fixed vs Adjustable Laptop Stand: Which Should You Get?
Laptop stands come in two main styles: fixed stands that sit at one height, and adjustable stands that change height and angle. Both raise your screen. They suit different desks and routines.
Fixed stands
Usually a single piece of aluminum or a simple frame.
Good:
- Very stable. Nothing to loosen or wobble.
- Clean look on the desk.
- No setup. Put the laptop on and go.
Less good:
- One height. Usually around 6 inches. Fine for many people, but not adjustable for tall users or standing desks.
- Fit limits. One-piece stands often fit laptops up to a certain depth. The Rain Design mStand fits laptops less than 10.4 inches deep.
Adjustable stands
Hinged or telescopic designs that change height and angle, and often fold.
Good:
- Set your exact height and angle, for any chair, desk or person.
- Suit standing desks if they go high enough. The Nulaxy 18-inch stand goes up to 18 inches.
- Often fold flat for travel.
Less good:
- Can wobble more when fully extended, especially cheap ones. Look for dual supports or a solid base.
- More parts to adjust and to wear over time.
Which should you choose?
- One desk, one person, sitting: a fixed stand is simple and solid.
- Standing desk, shared desk or you're very tall or short: adjustable.
- You work in different places: a foldable adjustable stand.
- Big laptop, 16 or 17 inches: check the stand's size range and weight capacity first.
Either way
Use an external keyboard and mouse, and set the screen so its top is around eye level. See our laptop stand setup guide.
