How to Keep a Robot Mop Dock Clean and Odor-Free

By Best Pick Guide Editorial Team · Updated

A self-washing mop dock removes most of the work, not all of it. The station collects dirty water, wet fibers and hair, and if it is never cleaned it starts to smell and the mops start leaving streaks. Ten minutes a week keeps it fresh.

Every few runs: the water tanks

Weekly: the wash tray

The tray under the robot where the mops are scrubbed collects hair and grit.

  1. Take out the removable washboard or tray.
  2. Rinse it under the tap and brush out hair with an old toothbrush.
  3. Wipe the area underneath, where dirty water gathers.
  4. Let it dry before putting it back.

Weekly: the robot itself

Monthly: mops and filters

Why drying matters

Docks that hot-air dry the mops after washing, which several in our comparison do, are far less prone to smells. If yours does not, run the robot's drying mode or leave the mops out to dry after each mop run.

Signs something is wrong

Keep to that routine and a washing dock will stay close to the hands-free promise.
