Lap Desk vs Bed Tray vs Overbed Table: Which Is Best for a Laptop in Bed?
There are three main ways to hold a laptop in bed or on the couch. They look different, cost different amounts of space, and suit different habits. Here's how to choose.
Lap desk
A flat top with a cushion underneath. It rests on your legs.
Good:
- Light and quick. The LAPGEAR Home Office Pro weighs 2.8 lb and has a carry handle.
- Great on the couch, where a tray's legs may not sit level on cushions.
- Extras built in: many have a mouse pad, wrist rest and phone slot.
Less good:
- Fixed height and angle. The screen sits wherever your knees put it.
- It moves when you move. Shift your legs and the laptop shifts too.
- Usually no weight rating in the listing.
Best for: short sessions on the sofa, and people who move around the house.
Bed tray (folding laptop table)
A top on short folding legs. It stands on the mattress over your lap.
Good:
- Adjustable. Many have several heights and a tilting top. The SONGMICS bed desk has 8 heights from 10 to 14.2 inches and tilts up to 120 degrees.
- Steady. The legs carry the weight, not your knees. The SONGMICS is rated for 55 lb.
- Bigger tops. A 22-inch-wide top fits a laptop and a mouse.
- Folds flat to slide under the bed.
Less good:
- Needs a flat-ish surface. Soft mattresses and couch cushions can make it rock a little.
- Heavier than a lap desk.
Best for: sitting up in bed to work, study or watch for an hour or more.
Overbed table
A table on a wheeled base that rolls in from the side of the bed, with a top that reaches over the mattress.
Good:
- Goes much higher. The FLEXISPOT H7 adjusts from 26 to 41.7 inches with a gas spring, so it also works as a small standing desk.
- Nothing on the bed. You can get in and out without lifting anything.
- Rolls away and tucks its low base under furniture.
Less good:
- Takes floor space beside the bed.
- Needs assembly and doesn't fold.
- Often no tilt, and a lower weight rating. The H7 recommends 15.4 lb maximum.
Best for: a bedroom that doubles as an office, or anyone who wants the laptop over the bed without a tray on the covers.

How to choose
- Where do you use it most? Couch: lap desk. Bed: bed tray. Beside the bed every day: overbed table.
- How long do you sit? Longer sessions favor a tray or table you can adjust.
- How big is your laptop? For 16 or 17 inches, check the top size. The HUANUO lap desk fits a 17-inch laptop.
- Where will it live? Trays fold under the bed. Overbed tables need a corner.
