Is a Grind-and-Brew Coffee Maker Worth It?
A grind-and-brew coffee maker promises fresh-ground coffee with no extra step. For many people, that's exactly right. For others, a separate grinder and brewer is the better buy. Here's how to tell which you are.
Why fresh grinding matters
Ground coffee goes stale fast, because so much more of it is exposed to air. Whole beans stay fresh for weeks. Grinding right before brewing is the easiest way to make your coffee taste noticeably better, whatever machine you use.
The case for a combo machine
- One step. Fill the hopper and tank, press a button, and it grinds and brews.
- Timers. Many let you set it the night before, so coffee is ready when you wake up, with beans ground minutes earlier.
- Less counter space than a grinder plus a coffee maker.
- Less mess. Grounds go straight from grinder to filter.
The case for separate machines
- Better grinders. A standalone burr grinder usually gives more grind settings and more even results.
- Replace one part at a time. If the grinder fails in a combo machine, you may lose the whole machine.
- More brew methods. A separate grinder also works for French press, pour-over or AeroPress.
- Easier cleaning. Steam from brewing can make grounds clump in a combo machine's chute.
Who should buy a combo
- You drink drip coffee most days and want it simple.
- You like the idea of waking up to fresh coffee on a timer.
- You're short on counter space.
If that's you, choose a model with an adjustable or burr grinder. The Breville Grind Control adjusts its grind and brews into a thermal carafe.
Who should buy separate machines
- You want to try several brew methods.
- You care about fine control over grind size.
- You'd rather replace a grinder or brewer on its own if one breaks.

A middle option
Single-serve grind-and-brew machines grind just enough for one cup. The Cuisinart Single-Serve + Grinder also takes pods, so you can mix fresh beans and convenience.
