Heated Vest Sizing for Women: How to Get the Fit Right for Layering

A heated vest only works if the warm panels sit close to you. Too loose and the heat goes into the air between you and the vest. Too tight and it won't close over a sweater, or the battery pocket digs in. Getting the size right matters more than with a normal vest.

How a heated vest should fit

A good fit is snug but not squeezing:

Most women's heated vests are cut close for this reason. KOVNLO calls its cut "slim" with an elastic hem, and Hotrego describes its vest as slim-fit with an adjustable hem.

How to measure

You need a soft tape measure and the layers you'll wear under the vest.

  1. Chest: measure around the fullest part of your chest, over a base layer.
  2. Waist: measure around your natural waist, the narrowest part.
  3. Hips: some vests reach your hips, so measure the widest part if the chart lists it.

Then compare your numbers to the size chart on the listing, not your usual letter size. Brands size differently, and a medium in one can be a large in another.

Should you size up for layers?

It depends on what goes under it and over it.

Sizing up "just in case" is the most common mistake. A loose heated vest feels less warm.

Women's cut vs unisex

A women's cut usually has more room at the chest and hips, less at the waist, and a shorter length. A unisex vest is often cut straighter and longer.

Unisex isn't always a bad thing. The DR.PREPARE hooded vest is unisex but has zippers down each side that let out the waist from 40.2 to 52 inches. That helps if you're between sizes or want to wear it over different layers on different days. Just know the shoulders and length may be cut for a wider range of bodies.

Check the size range

Size ranges vary a lot. Among the vests we compared:

If you wear XS, check that it's offered before you fall for a vest. If you wear 3XL or 4XL, the Hotrego and KOVNLO are worth a look.

Don't forget the battery pocket

The battery usually rides in a zip pocket on the inside or at the hip. A 10,000mAh USB power bank, like the one that comes with the Hotrego, can be a bit bulkier than a slim vest battery. If the vest is very tight, you'll feel it. Leave room at your side, and check where the pocket sits before you buy.
