Best Coffee Grinders for Espresso of 2026: 5 Compared for Fine Adjustment & Dosing

By Best Pick Guide Editorial Team · Updated

Espresso is the least forgiving way to make coffee. The water is pushed through a tightly packed puck in about half a minute, so a grind that's a hair too coarse runs sour and fast, and a hair too fine chokes the machine and tastes bitter.

That's why an espresso machine is only as good as its grinder. General-purpose grinders often jump between settings in steps too big for espresso, and without timed dosing, every shot starts with a slightly different amount of coffee.

We compared five espresso grinders, from a manual hand grinder to an Italian flat-burr grinder. One combines stepless adjustment, 55 mm flat burrs and touchscreen timed dosing in a sound-insulated body.

Why Eureka Mignon Specialita Espresso Grinder is our #1 pick

Every possible grind size

The Specialita adjusts steplessly, so you can make the tiny changes espresso needs, not jump between fixed clicks. That's how you take a shot from sour to sweet without overshooting into bitter.

Big flat burrs

Its 55 mm hardened steel flat burrs are the largest on any Mignon. Flat burrs of this size are a favorite for espresso because they're designed for an even grind at very fine settings.

The same dose every shot

The touchscreen lets you set grind times for single and double shots. Press once and you get the same amount of coffee each time, which is half of making espresso repeatable.

What to look for

Fine adjustment comes first

Espresso needs very small grind changes. Stepless grinders and grinders with micro-steps let you make them. Grinders with a few dozen fixed settings can leave the best shot between two clicks.

Decide on dosing: timed or single-dose

Timed dosing grinds the same amount at the press of a button. Single-dose grinders have almost no retention but need you to weigh beans every time. Both work; choose the routine you'll stick to.

Check portafilter fit

Grinding straight into the portafilter saves a step. Check that the grinder's cradle or dosing cup fits your machine's portafilter size, most often 54 mm or 58 mm.

Think about other brews

Some espresso grinders are poor at coarse settings. If you also make French press or cold brew, choose one that covers the full range, or keep a second grinder for coarse coffee.

FAQ

Can I use a regular burr grinder for espresso?

Only if it adjusts finely enough. Many all-round grinders reach espresso fineness but jump in steps too big to dial in well. A grinder built for espresso, or with micro-steps, makes it much easier.

Flat or conical burrs for espresso?

Both make good espresso. Flat burrs are popular for even, clear-tasting shots; conical burrs are common in compact and hand grinders. Adjustment and consistency matter more than burr shape.

What is grind retention?

It's the coffee left inside the grinder after you grind. Low retention means less stale coffee mixing into your next shot. Single-dose grinders like the DF54 are designed for near-zero retention.

Is a manual grinder good enough for espresso?

Yes, a good one is. The 1Zpresso J-Ultra adjusts in 8-micron clicks, finer than many electric grinders. The trade-off is cranking by hand for every shot.

Bottom line

For espresso, the Eureka Mignon Specialita is the grinder to buy: stepless 55 mm flat burrs, touchscreen timed dosing and a quiet, sound-insulated body. Choose the Baratza Sette 270 for programmable doses and fast grinding, the DF54 for single-dose flat-burr espresso, the Breville Smart Grinder Pro for an easy all-rounder, and the 1Zpresso J-Ultra for espresso by hand.
